Yvonne Swanson

Yvonne Jane Swanson of Harlingen, Texas died on January 9, 2019 at home surrounded by family.  She was born to LD and Dorothy Thompson in Weslaco, TX on August 4, 1928.

Her survivors include children Doris (JD) Pickering of Mercedes, Bruce (Glyn) Swanson of Laguna Niguel, CA, and Anita Swanson of Harlingen.  Also two grandchildren, Louis Swanson-Miscolta and Cerise Swanson of Laguna Niguel, CA.  Also numerous nieces and nephews.  Yvonne has one brother, Baldwin (Patsy) Thompson of Gonzales, TX.   She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harley.

Yvonne enjoyed her occupation of teaching many subjects over most of the grade levels, but especially enjoyed Texas History.  Family trips always included her using her good map skills to lead us to historical sights.  She was involved in cub scouts, boy scouts, and girl scouts and community cookie chairman for a year.

She sang in her church choir and later tackled playing in her church bell choir.  For many years, she also taught Sunday School for the children and director of many Sunday School Christmas programs.  In later years, she became involved with NARFE and the Republican Club, always encouraging others to vote.  She spent many Thursday afternoons volunteering in the Archives Room at Lon C. Hill Public Library of Harlingen helping preserve Harlingen history.

The family would like to extend deep gratitude to Kindred Hospice for the dedicated care given to our mother.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in San Benito, TX.
