Harlingen, TX- Yvonne S. Montemayor, age 64, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2014 among family and friends at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas.
She was born on February 27, 1950 in Edinburg, Texas to Santos Salinas and Olga P. Salinas of Pharr, TX. Yvonne grew up in Pharr and graduated from Pharr-San Juan- Alamo High. Yvonne went on to graduate from Pan American College where she received both her Bachelors in Elementary Education and Masters of Education in Education Administration. It was at Pan American that she would meet Joe Montemayor, the love of her life. Yvonne and Joe married on August 25, 1972 in Pharr, Texas. Together, they had three children; Jaye, Omar, and Holly. Yvonne spent her first six years of teaching in multiple districts; PSJA ISD, Lubbock ISD, and North East ISD, before coming to Harlingen H.C.I.S.D. Yvonne spent thirty-six years with Harlingen C.I.S.D. with twenty-six of them as the principal of Zavala Elementary. During her time at Zavala Yvonne made many lifelong relationships with teachers, students, and parents. Zavala was her home away from home. Yvonne’s special interest included being an active member of her church, El Buen Samaritano, playing chalupa with her friends, and attending the athletic events of her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband of forty-two years, Joe; children, Jaye, Omar, and Holly; brother, Lupe Salinas and his wife Nellie of Alamo; five grandchildren, Chris, Omari, Jeremiah, Basil, and Emma. Yvonne will be remembered as a bright, shining light in the Harlingen community she served.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at San Benito Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at San Benito Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Honored to be her pallbearers are Jaye Montemayor (son), Christopher Montemayor (grandson), Omari Montemayor (grandson), Ivar Perez (cousin), David Pena (cousin) and Eddie Montemayor (Brother in law). Honorary pallbearer is Jeremiah Montemayor.
