Woodford Grimes (Woody) Spillman
Harlingen, Texas:
Woodford Grimes (Woody) Spillman passed from among us on January 29, 2013.
Woody was born on January 17, 1927 in Lawson, Missouri. He grew up and lived most of his life in Jamesport, Missouri where he was President and C.E.O of the Home Exchange Bank. He held offices in banking organizations and served at one time as Regional Vice President of the Missouri Bankers Association.
In addition of his banking activities he was active in other business ventures including a lumber yard, a Laundromat, a Western Auto Store and Property management.
Woody was licensed by the State of Missouri as an Insurance Agent and Broker as well as a Real Estate Broker and was active in Community affairs.
Woody served during WWII in the U.S. Maritime Service and did overseas duty with the U.S. Merchant Marines which earned him an honorable discharge from the U.S. Coast Guard and a commendation from the President Harry S. Truman.
Woody retired in 1977 at age 50 and made the Rio Grande Valley his home in 1983. In retirement he still remained active and worked for a short time for the First National Bank of South Padre Island and served as Executive Director of the Rio Grande Valley Subcontractors Association.
He also owned and managed the Oakridge Apartment Complex in Harlingen from 1995 until his death.
Woody had an unusual zest for living. He was a pilot, a motorcyclist, a sailor and loved to travel, dine out and dance.
Woody was an individual and considered himself a maverick. He was conservative in politics and economics but liberal where personal freedoms were concerned.
Woody lived by the golden rule but was not a religious man so he leaves the following poem by Preston Sturges for critics of the way he lived.
Now I lay me down to die
I pray my neighbors not to pry
Too deeply into sins, that I,
Not only cannot here deny
But much enjoyed as time flew by.
Woody is survived by two daughters, Ms. Barbara Smith of Blackwater, MO and Ms. Sherry Whitt of Princeton, MO.; one son, Terry Spillman of Trenton, MO; eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Woody leaves a host of friends in the Rio Grande Valley and one very dear and cherished friend and soul mate of many years, Mrs. Adelaida (Lina) Garcia.
A celebration of Woody’s life will be held February 23, 2013, 10:30 a.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jamesport Community Association, P.O. Box 215, Jamesport, MO 64648 for the A.V. Spillman Event Center.
