Winona Dee-Bakken passed away on Monday, March 1, 2010 at her residence.  Winona was born in Chicago, Illinois on January 17, 1919.
She graduated from Loyola University with a Degree in Nursing and later a Degree in Special Education from Northwestern University.  Winona served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II and was stationed at Fort Sheridan, Illinois, Townsville, Australia and Hollandia, Dutch New Ginuea.
She moved from Highland, Indiana to the Valley in 1975, and was a member of the Rancho Viejo Ladies Golf Association, a sport she enjoyed.
Winona was preceded in death by her first husband, Major John J. Dee, whom she married in Townsville, Australia in 1944; and a son, John J. Dee, Jr.
She is survived by her husband, Les Bakken; two daughters, Lynn Dee of Chicago, Illinois and Laurice Dee of Mesa, Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Kathleen Dee Winterling of Alexandria, VA; and two grandchildren, Bryan and Megan.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 5, 2010 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and a Catholic funeral service to be held at 7 p.m. with Deacon Paul McArdele, officiating.
Military graveside services will be held Monday, March 8, 2010 at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas at 10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Odyssey Hospice of South Texas, 2501 Paredes Line Road, Suite B-9, Brownsville, Texas 78526.
