CSM William A. McCormick passed away on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at the age of 92. William, lovingly known as Mac and/or Buddy, was born to E.A. and Carrie McCormick in Summit, Mississippi on February 3, 1929. He was the youngest of six children.
At the age of 17, Mac decided to leave the farm and join the U.S. Army. Upon his completion of basic training, he was sent to Japan to drive refrigerated trucks to resupply the occupying forces. Upon his return to the states, he was sent to a school in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. It was here that he met the love of his life, Mary. Mac, Mary and their six boys relished the Army life. In addition to his stateside assignments, the family spent one tour in France and three tours in Germany. Mac also served two tours in Vietnam and a humanitarian tour in the Dominican Republic. In his time in the military, he served as a jumpmaster with the 82nd Airborne, earned the Legion of Merit and Distinguished Service Medals and retired after 30 years with the rank of Command Sergeant Major (CSM), the highest rank that an enlisted man could attain. Duty, honor, country and family are the values that defined his character and his life.
Mac is survived by Mary, his wife of 71 years; four sons, Shelly (Regina), Wayne (Delores), Mitch (Penni) and Steve (Sandie); 14 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all of whom will forever be grateful for his life and will love him forever.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five siblings, Paul Edward, Thelma, Owen, Virginia and Edythe and his two sons, Bill and John.
A private family service will be conducted at the RGV Veteran’s Cemetery in Mission, where he will receive full military honors.
