“William Augustus Fisher, M.D., died in Houston on May 26th, 2014. He was born July 3rd, 1923, in Cressona, Pennsylvania, son of Aaron and Beulah Fisher. William graduated from Lykens Pennsylvania High School in 1941. He attended Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania on a football and academic scholarship. William entered the Navy V-12 Program in 1942 and was sent to Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor's of Science degree in chemistry. He then graduated from Temple University Medical school in 1948. William interned at National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and finished his pediatrics residency at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania. He was discharged in 1948 and established a pediatrics practice in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. William was recalled into the navy in 1952 and served at Cherry Point Marine Air Station in North Carolina. He was discharged again in 1953 as a Lieutenant in the Naval Reserve. William practiced pediatrics as part of the Creston Medical Clinic in Creston, Iowa for 19 years and then moved to Harlingen, Texas. He practiced pediatrics with the Valley Children's Clinic and at Valley Baptist Medical Center, where he helped establish the first neonatal intensive care unit in the Rio Grande Valley. William retired in 2001 after having cared for two full generations of children. William was married in August of 1946 to Doris Emma Bacastow of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He is survived by their four children: daughter, Andrea Fisher Maril, PhD, of Santa Fe, New Mexico (three children, Travis Maril (Christina), Lauren Flores (Lionel), and Jordan Kessler (William)), son, Michael Fisher, J.D. (Carmen) of Brownsville, TX (daughter, Camille), son, Charles Fisher, M.D. (Elsie) of Harlingen, Texas, (two sons, Thomas and Mark), son, Steven Fisher, J.D. (Monica) of Houston, Texas, (two children, Matthew and Olivia). Doris preceded him in death in 1990. William then married Barbara Baker Bush of Creston, Iowa. He is preceded in death by his stepson, Craig Bush and survived by his stepdaughter, Tina Yeager (John) of Des Moines, Iowa, (step granddaughter, Stacey Nielsen) and step great granddaughters, Monica Lee and Jenna Lee. Barbara and William have lived at the Harlingen Country Club for 23 years where they have many good friends. William will be cremated and a memorial service will be held at St. Alban's Episcopal Church on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in Harlingen, Texas. Graveside services for the family are pending. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice."
