William Robert (Billy Bob) English, 70, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014 at Harlingen Medical Center.
Billy Bob was born in Edinburg, TX on January 7, 1944 to Margaret S. Clements and Dwight L. English. He graduated from Edinburg High School in 1961 and The University of Texas in Austin in 1965 with a BBA. He played tennis at an early age and was ranked as #1boys doubles team 18 and under with John Hunter in Texas after winning the Texas Sectionals Tennis Tournament in 1961. Around 30 years old he became an avid golfer and enjoyed numerous golfing trips with many fellow golfers. His highlight of golfing experiences was winning the “Life Begins At 40” Golf Tournament and the Rio Grande Valley Golf Championship in 1995.
After graduating from college, Billy Bob started Gulf Packing Co. with his father in 1965. He sold the business in 1980 and became an insurance agent with his wife at English Insurance Agency. In 1990, he and Lee Fisher started F & E Auto Sales which they operated together until 1995. Since then Billy Bob and his wife, son and stepdaughter have operated the business. He also was a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Harlingen.
Billy Bob is survived by his wife, Ellen (Perk) Lauree English, son, Anthony “Alan” English, step-daughter, Julie Kay Herrington, granddaughter, Vivian Leigh English, nephews, Dwight E. Wright and Clint B. Wright and niece, M. Elizabeth Elrod. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jo Ann Wright.
A memorial service celebrating Billy Bob’s life will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Harlingen, 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 25, 2014.
