Harlingen:
Wayne Thomas Farber, 96, of Palm Valley, passed away July 20, 2015, at La Hacienda Healthcare in Harlingen, Texas. He was born in Neligh, Nebraska, on Oct. 13, 1918, to Tom W. Farber and Mae Lydon Farber.
Wayne graduated from Neligh High School at age 16, and from the University of Nebraska with a chemical engineering degree in 1941. He was a chemist with Pittsburg Plate Glass before being commissioned an officer in the United States Navy in 1942. Following service in World War II, he and his wife, the former Jayne Stuart, returned to Neligh in 1945, joining his father in developing the family’s department stores. Upon retirement, Wayne and his wife relocated to Harlingen in 1978.
In Nebraska, Wayne served his community in the Rotary Club, Masons, Boy Scouts, American Legion, Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, Neligh City Council, Antelope Country Club, and First Congregational Church. Hunting, fishing, golf, and supporting his children’s school activities were favorite pastimes. In Harlingen, he was a member of First Presbyterian Church, serving for many years as greeter, and Harlingen Country Club, where he enjoyed his breakfast coffee group and golfed into his 90s. A gentleman and a gentleman, he will be remembered for his devotion to family, faith, humility, sense of humor, and kindness.
Wayne was predeceased by his parents, beloved wife Jayne, and sister Doris Farber Taylor. Survivors include son Tom (JoAnne) of Neligh, NE; daughter Linda (Tom) Hangen of Peachtree City, GA; grandchildren Chad and Troy Hangen, Shelly (Ryan) Furstenau, and Stacey (Kevin) Christiansen; and great-grandchildren Claudia Hangen; Paige, Chase, Kate and Reid Furstenau; and Kaden, Landon and Stella Christiansen.
A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Monday, August 3, at 10 a.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
