Walter W. Campbell, 91, passed away on September 29, 2014 in Harlingen, Texas. Walter was born March 3, 1923 in Canton, Ohio to Charles Clarence Campbell and Ruth Minnie Loschinski. He proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII. Walter was a 3 Star Sergeant and served as a 30 Caliber Expert and Battalion Leader of an Active Artillery Unit. He was honorably discharge in 1945 as a Private First Class of the Battery D 407th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion.
Walter was employed with Republic Steel (LTV) in Canton, Ohio and retired with 41 years of employment. He and his wife Ettarose moved to South Texas in 1995 where they enjoyed warmer climate, valley-grown fruits and vegetables and long road trips in search of Texas wildflowers (particularly bluebonnets). Their road trips also included visits with much loved relatives in Austin and an occasional trip across the Border for those “Special Deals”. Walter faithfully attended the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen, where he enjoyed holiday programs and visiting on Sunday mornings with church members. In his later years, he enjoyed watching old John Wayne Movies, watching football and was never seen without a cup of coffee.
Walter is survived by his daughters, Diana Campbell Benson of Englewood, FL; Debra Campbell Robin (Ronnie) of Harlingen, TX, whom he resided with, grandchildren; Matthew Ray (Elizabeta) Benson and three great-grandchildren of Lakewood, CO, Nicole Suzanne Benson of Malvern, OH, Kristoffer Michael (Meredith) Benson and two great grandchildren of Princeton, IL and Justin Benson of Paducah, KY, Megan Mae (Patrick) Pecoraro and one great grandchild of SLC, UT, and Sara Rose (Doug) Brock and two great grandchildren of Dewey, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Ettarose Kirk Campbell; parents, Charles Clarence and Ruth Minnie Campbell; sisters, Arlene Ross (George), Gertrude Houston (William), Doris Kirby (Frank); and brother, John Campbell (Edna).
A private ceremony was held October 1, 2014 in Harlingen, Texas for immediate family only.
