Virginia M. Greek

October 19, 1922 — August 9, 2013

Harlingen, TX:
Virginia M. Greek, 90, passed away August 9, 2013 at Retama Manor.  She was born on Oct. 19, 1922 to Robert and Minnie (Engle) Hayes in Redfield, So. Dakota.
She and Von E. Greek married on Aug. 31. 1940 and they had four children: Sons - Von Leroy Greek and Vance S. Greek (Donna), daughters – Vickie Russell (Jim) and Valerie Greek Chastain (Dale), Grandchildren - Vonda Kaye Smith, Venee’ Harrell, Venice West, Shawn Mabry, Derek Kachtik, Valora Bock, Vanessa Beebe, Vashti Wright, Steven Greek, Gina Funderburger. They had 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Von and Virginia moved their family from Princeton, Indiana to Rio Hondo, TX in 1956 - where they loved the small town atmosphere. They immediately joined the First Baptist Church in Rio Hondo and she taught Sunday School and also in the church’s mission. Prayer Harlingenmeetings were frequently held in their home.
Virginia worked for the Rio Hondo Superintendent of schools, U.S. Post Office, Personal secretary (with secret service clearance) for a Colonel at Harlingen Air Force Base where she handled daily papers to the Pentagon, U.S. Water Boundary Commission (secretary) and Secretary for Vance Greek Music Studio.
She was an avid student of the Bible and other books by Bible scholars. She wrote the text “The Blood Covenant” which is the foundational principle for Christianity.
Virginia’s greatest love was her family and her Lord Jesus Christ. Von taught them to sing and Virginia taught them the Bible and how to pray. Through their childhood, traveling was fun – they learned to harmonize. The Greek Family sang on many church-event stages.
“Meme” built a strong faith into their children. Leroy sang with the family and in the Rio Hondo Baptist Church Choir. Vickie and Valerie were/are Bible teachers and Praise and Prayer leaders. Vance has lead the Fun & Sun (San Benito) Sunday Worship Service for forty three years. Currently, he is also the Rio Hondo Baptist Church Minister of Music. Their sweet mother sat close to their stages and was their greatest encourager. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Late in life, Virginia asked, “Why am I still here?” That was easy for everyone to answer: She was needed; many people called her for prayer - “When Meme Greek prayed, things happened.” Now, after her passing, numerous testimonies are flowing in about how she had impacted their lives.
Family members who have gone on to Heaven by faith in their Lord, Jesus Christ are father and mother – Robert and Minnie Hayes; sisters – Lillian Wallace, Nettie Wilson and Ethel Hendin; brothers – Lawrence Hayes, Robert Hayes; beloved husband – Von E. Greek (1994) and beloved daughter – Valerie Chastain (2012).
Visitation hours will be held on Sunday, August 11, 2013 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.  at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held Monday, August 12, 2013, at 10 a.m., at Rio Hondo Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Horton officiating. Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
