Vicki R. Roy, 74, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2018 in Harlingen, TX.
Vicki was born in Pope, MS on August 11, 1944 to Gresham and Nell Rowsey. She attended schools in Mississippi and was a graduate of Tech High School in Memphis, TN. In 1972 she graduated from the LPN Program at the Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis, TN and then completed a one year course in Spanish. That training enabled her to work as a missionary nurse in Monterrey, Mexico for 5 years. In 1978 she attained a LVN license in Texas and started working at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen.
In 1982, Vicki graduated Cum Laude from the Regional Nurse Program at Southmost College in Brownsville, TX, and then worked 1 year at Valley Baptist Medical Center as a float charge nurse in all the departments. After expanding her personal and professional horizons she enrolled at Pan American University in Edinburgh, TX and received a double major in Spanish and History and then was appointed 2 Alpha Chi Honor Society.
For many years, Vicki managed several home health agencies in the Rio Grande Valley before opening her own home health business in 1995. She has owned and operated Vicki Roy Home Health Care and Vicki Roy Home Health Services in Harlingen. In 2002, she was named the Business Person of the Year and went to Washington, DC to receive the award representing the state of Texas. And in 2003 she was featured in the Discover Health Magazine.
Vicki was very involved in the Harlingen community for many years. She ran for city commissioner at one time, she was an avid supporter of the Harlingen Christmas Parade, and focused her efforts to better the lives of the disabled and disadvantaged. She was a lifelong supporter of missionary efforts around the world. In 2001 she founded Vision Evangelism Inc. to support missionary efforts which were mainly located in Mexico.
She is survived by her 8 children, numerous grandchildren and 1 sister.
Visitation will be held at the Lighthouse Fellowship Chapel in Harlingen from 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Monday, October 1, 2018 and again from 12:00 PM till 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018. A celebration of Vicki’s life will begin at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at the church. Burial services will be held in Pope, MS at a later date.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Raymond Daniel Roy, John Wesley Roy, Butch Richie, Bill (Captain) Little and Frank Garcia.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Todd Shenkenberg and Sulema O. Catano for all their care and concern.
Vicki will be remembered as someone who was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
