Sue Verla Bennett

Verla "Sue" Bennett was 78 and living in Harlingen, TX when she died on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 after a long illness.
She was born on August 13, 1938 in Edinburg, TX to William Marion and Pearl Lee Guinn Campbell.
She is survived by her brother, William Campbell; her nephew, Jim Campbell (Maria); her niece, Sheryl Bennett Ramirez (Roy); step nieces and nephews, Connie Neuse, Dennis Ballard and Doug Ballard; great nieces, Stephanie Campbell and Crystal Campbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie (Bill) Ray Bennett, her half-brother, Lee Roy Campbell and half-sister, Lula Mae Wilson, her sister-in-law, Mary Louise Campbell, and her niece, Sandra Sue Campbell.
Sue was a longtime educator with the Harlingen School District. She taught at Bowie Elementary and then at Crockett Elementary where she became an assistant principal. In 1988, Mr. Cleckler recruited her as an assistant principal at Alamo High School. Then in 1990, she became principal of Sam Houston Elementary where she stayed until she retired in 2006.
Sue was on the board at the Harlingen Area Teachers Credit Union from 1985 to 2001, serving as Board Chair from 1998 to 2011. She was a charter member of Mu Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; member of the Texas State Teacher's Retirement System, serving as representative for the Harlingen TRS; and member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter BY.
She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Harlingen and moved her membership to Calvary Baptist Church on October 14, 2012.
Visitation hours will be held Monday, August 7, 2017 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church, at 10:00 A.M. with reception to follow at the church. A private family burial will be held at 2:00 PM at Valley Memorial Gardens in Mission, TX.
Pallbearers will include some of her past students; Hector Solis, George Delaunay, Daniel Gonzales, O.A. Garcia, Rick Contreras, nephew, Jim Campbell and nephew-in-law, Roy Ramirez.
