Verdelle C. Wiegand
Santa Rosa/Harlingen – Verdelle Carolyn Wiegand passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008, in Harlingen, TX. She was born on July 4, 1934, in Santa Rosa, Texas, the seventh of eight children to Frederick L. and Ora C. Gaertner Wiegand. She attended public schools in Santa Rosa where she graduated in 1951.
After taking business courses at Edinburg Regional College, she worked at the First National Bank of Harlingen and its successor banks for 38 years, rising through the ranks to important positions in the Loan and Trust Departments. When she retired in 1989, many employees wrote notes acknowledging her influence in their careers as a mentor, trainer, counselor, and friend.
While working at the Bank she was very active in the Sundial Chapter of the National Secretaries Association and in 1967 earned the National distinction as a Certified Professional Secretary.
Verdelle joined the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen in 1963. She was active in the Martha Circle and Friendship Sunday School Class and served the congregation through the Outreach Council, Administrative Board, Finance, Memorial and Hospitality teams.
Verdelle enjoyed her nieces and nephews, and gardening, traveling, bowling and baking. In retirement she volunteered at the Marine Military Academy’s Visitor Center and served as the La Feria/Santa Rosa area membership renewal volunteer for the Harlingen Community Concert Association.
Verdelle is survived by her sisters Twila Wallace (Jack) of Dallas and Lela Wiegand of Santa Rosa; brother, Roe Wiegand of Fort Worth, Lynn Wiegand of Fairfield, PA, and Craig Wiegand (Marguerite) of Weslaco; seven nieces and seven nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Lois Crofford (John) of Houston.
The Wiegand family thanks Hilda Gonzalez, Dr. Teresa Lightner, Dr. Todd Shenkenberg, Dr. Shridhar Kotta, the staffs of the Canterbury Court and Retama Manor for their loving care of Verdelle.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, March 19, 2008, 3 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church of Harlingen with Rev. Steve Purdy officiating.
