Janice Cook, age 90, died peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2016 in Harlingen, Texas.
She was born in Old Kemp, Oklahoma to Saloma and Francis Garner on September 1, 1925. The Garners were farmers and moved from Oklahoma to the Rio Grande Valley during the Depression. When Janice finished school, she went to work for Bell Telephone. In 1945, she met and married Richard Cook of McAllen who was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps.
In 1946, Janice had twin sons, Donald and Ronald, who were born in McAllen. Several months later, the family sailed from New Jersey to Germany where Richard served in the American Occupation Force. When they returned to the United States, the family lived in San Antonio where Richard was stationed at Kelley Air Force Base. In 1952, Richard was transferred to Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya. Janice and her sons moved to North Africa to join Richard several months later.
In 1956, Janice and her family returned to South Texas when Richard was assigned to Harlingen Air Force Base. When the Base was closed in the early 1960s, Richard retired from the Air Force and joined the Social Security Administration. Janice and he lived in Harlingen for the rest of their lives.
Janice loved the adventure of living in Germany and Libya, but was delighted to return to Texas. She enjoyed gardening, fishing and square dancing. She also became a fan of the San Antonio Spurs and the Dallas Cowboys.
Janice is survived by her son Ronald and his wife Nancy of Houston, her sisters Faye and Cleo, brother Earl and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
