Sister Vanita Mae Flowers passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas.
Vanita was born in Harlingen, Texas on November 11, 1943 to Ed and Amy Brown Flowers. She was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.
Vanita attended Booker T. Washington School, Jay Jr. High School and attended a Business College in Harlingen.
Vanita was the first Black woman employed at Cameron County Health Department in San Benito, Texas and later retired after 33 years of service.
Vanita was a faithful member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Harlingen, Texas. She served as the Sunday School Superintendent, teacher, secretary, treasurer and choir member. She was a member of the Local and District Missions, and served as the secretary of the RGVB Association. She was a supporter of N.L. Washington Community Center in Harlingen and a member of the Rio Grande Valley Branch of the NAACP.
Vanita loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She had a passion for life, enjoyed listening to gospel music, reading, spending time with her friends and helping in the community.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Vanita was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Ed Flowers, Jr. (Bernice Colley Flowers), and Ernest Marvin Flowers, Sisters Ida Mae Flowers Lockridge (Booker T. Lockridge), and Thelma Flowers.
Vanita is survived by her nephew Barry B. Flowers and numerous cousins and dear friends.
