Thomas D. Segel, 81, of Harlingen, Texas, went to his eternal rest September 30, 2012.
He was born June 11, 1931 in Tacoma, Washington. He was twice wounded in the Korean War and served in media related positions in the United States and Asia. He was Director of Operations for Armed Force Radio and Television in Okinawa, Commander of Tuy Hoa Television and Radio in Vietnam, Director of Operation for the Armed Forces Vietnam Network and Main Station Manager for the Far East Network in Tokyo, Japan.
Thomas retired after 26 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps and moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1974 to work as Director of Information for the Marine Military Academy. He served as the Executive Director of the Pan American University Alumni Association His final position was Director, Division of Information, Rio Grande State Center. After retirement, he continued as a contract media consultant for the State of Texas.
He held undergraduate degrees in Government and English, along with a Masters degree in Institutional Advancement. He is nationally published in both print and online media. His “Men in Space,” published by Paladin Press, was selected for both the national high school and junior high library lists. He held the Thomas Jefferson Award for Journalistic Excellence, was named Military Writer of the Year, and was Past National President of the Combat Correspondents Association. He was involved in civic and charitable endeavors, including the Board of Loaves and Fishes, Board of the Salvation Army, Public Information Director of North Harlingen Rotary, and member and Elder of Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Pattie Segel; son, Jason (Jodi) and grandchildren, Serena, Mariah and Blake of Smithville, Texas; brother, Nathan (Joan) and their children Robert, Kenneth (Candace), and Tracy (Dave); sister, Darlene Mauldin and her children Lorie (John), John (Sara), Susan (Will); and numerous grand nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:30 am at Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church in Harlingen with a luncheon reception to follow.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Harlingen Medical Center for the fine care they provided and for all those who lifted Tom and his family in prayer during this difficult time.
