Harlingen, TX:
Thomas (Tom) Joseph Kane III, 82, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at his residence in Harlingen.
A Chicago native and grandson of Irish and Polish immigrants, Tom followed his high school sweetheart to Harlingen where he and Ann would raise five children while co-owning and managing Richard’s Restaurant. He worked for over 30 years in the family business at Richard’s. Kids will remember him for the “knots” in their straws and adults will remember him for his quick wit, quick jokes and quickly shuffling across the restaurant to refill drinks.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Colleen (Stanley) Albury and Kelly (Henry) Roberts; son, Terry Kane; grandchildren, Lee Ann Albury, Joseph (Tiffany) Albury, Tracy Roberts Erin, Hilary Kane and Philip Roberts; great granddaughters, Gwendolyn Ann Kinzler and Kathryn Colleen Albury; sister, Janice Albury, and step-daughter, Vicki (Dennis) Kinzler. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 47 years, Ann, in 1999, three sons, Timothy Kane, Tracy Kane, Thomas (Tommy) Kane and second wife, Nancy Shofner Kane.
Those fortunate enough to know him will remember one of the funniest people they ever met. Those blessed enough to love him will recall a loving father, grandpa and “Great Papa”. He was a lifetime golfer with 8 holes-in-one and a huge fan of Notre Dame Football. His love of family, rum, golf, all things Irish, and sharp dressing will be fondly remembered. While the family would love a “Mulligan” with him, they are also happy he reunited with those he loved and lost. Save us a seat, Dad, we will join you at the “19th Hole” for happy hour with you, Mom and the gang.
In lieu of flowers the family request that you please buy Certs and liver sausage for fat pugs or a bottle of Rum for yourself! “Go-n-éirí an bóthar leat” Irish for “May the road rise up to meet you.” In lieu of flowers on a serious note, memorial donations can be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation, 4742 N. 24th Street, Suite 400, Phoenix, AZ 85016-4862.
To celebrate Tom’s life, there will be a gathering of family and friends on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at Tom’s residence in Harlingen from 2 pm to 4 pm. A private family service will be held at a later date.
