Thomas E. Barnett, age 81 of Kerrville, passed away Monday October 20, 2008 at his residence. He was born January 3, 1927 in Phoenix, AZ to Thomas E. Barnett and Mamie Christine Hower Barnett. His parents, brother-in-law, Armando Perez and mother-in-law, Pepita G. de Perez of San Benito, preceded him in death.
He married Maria Isabel Farias Barnett, then a purser for Pan American Airways. Tom graduated from high school at Tulsa Oklahoma in 1943 at the age of 16. During his high school years Tom worked at a print shop of a hardware company and a bank.
At 16 Tom moved to Chicago. Prior to enlisting in the United States Marine Corp he held various jobs in the area. He proudly served his country during World War II from February 1944 to February 1948. During the war he served in the Pacific Theater. Following the end of the war he was sent to North China and then was stationed in San Diego, San Francisco, Honolulu and Guam. After he was discharged he remained in Guam to work in power and telephone construction, then moving on to several business ventures in Southeast Asia.
After graduating from the University of California, Tom attended "Thunderbird," the American Graduate School for International Management where he won a scholarship and later an award for business achievement.
His career began with an advertising company in Chicago where he was sent to Caracas, Venezuela. Later he was promoted to President of its organization in Bogota, Colombia. He then moved to New York and was assigned the presidency of its branch in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He was ultimately assigned as President of its Operations in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, where he resided for thirty seven years. During this tenure he was awarded a citation for contribution to the economy of the State of Guanabara (Rio de Janeiro) by the Governor of that state. For four years he was a columnist for a weekly newspaper in Rio de Janeiro.
Upon Mr. Barnett's retirement, he and his wife Maria returned to their homeland in 1996, choosing Kerrville, TX after two years of research.
Survivors include his wife, Maria Isabel Farias Barnett of Kerrville, his sisters-in-law, Graciela and her husband Anibal Diaz of Laredo, Sylvia Schroeder of Harlingen and numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors include a cousin, Ramona Smith, Dallas Ann Judd of Tulsa, OK and Michael Smith of Chicago.
Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. on Friday October 24, at San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, Texas. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in San Benito. Entombment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Anibal Diaz, Rick Agado Sr., Daniel Ramos, Gilberto Hinojosa and Ricky Agado Jr. Honorary pallbearers will include, Tom Baugher, Al Pinkerton, Marco Diaz Enrique Diaz, Lonnie Garcia, Eddie Aguirre and Ramsey Barrera.
Tom was an avid lover of animals. He and his wife Maria were active members of the humane society. It is because of this that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made in his name to the Kathleen C. Cailoux Humane Society, P. O. Box 2190, Kerrville, Texas 78029
