Thelma Mae Flowers passed away Friday, April 19, 2013 at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Harlingen.
She was born in Harlingen, Texas November 23, 1934 to Ed and Amy Brown Flowers. She was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.
Thelma attended Booker T. Washington School in Harlingen and completed the requirements for high school graduation in McAllen, Texas. She attended Houston Tillotson College in Austin, Texas for two years.
She was employed by Mr. and Mrs. George H. Hury as a housekeeper and child care for their son Hank.
In 1954 Thelma became an employee of Valley Baptist Medical Center when the hospital was located on “F” St. She worked as a unit secretary on the 2nd floor and was the Unit Secretary on the 5th floor when she retired in 1997.
She was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Harlingen. She served as a Sunday School Superintendent and Building Fund Secretary/Treasurer.
Thelma was a supporter of the N.L. Washington Community Center, Harlingen and a member of the N.A.A.C.P. Rio Grande Valley Branch.
She enjoyed listening to gospel music, gardening, reading and photography. She especially liked spending time with family and friends at the beach on South Padre Island.
Thelma was a devoted daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Ed Junior Flowers and Ernest Marvin Flowers; sister, Ida Mae Flowers Lockridge; brother-in-law, Booker T. Lockridge; and sister-in-law, Bernice Colley Flowers
She is survived by her sister, Vanita Mae Flowers; nephew, Barry B. Flowers; and numerous cousins and dear friends.
The family thanks the paramedics, Dr. Holder, Dr. Sanusi, DaVita Dialysis Staff, Magic Valley Health Services, VBMC staff and Odyssey Hospice for their efforts on behalf of Thelma.
Visitation hours will be held Sunday, April 21, 2013 from 12 pm to 5 pm at funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 22, 2013, 2 p.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home with Rev. Riley Rice officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria.
