Teresa G. Cantu

December 12, 1921 — August 4, 2015

SAN BENITO, TX. – Teresa Gonzales Cantu, born on December 12, 1921, entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family at her San Benito residence on August 4, 2015. She was 93 years old, and a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and a sister.

Teresa was the first female Hispanic to graduate from Los Fresnos High School in May of 1941. Besides gathering with her family, gardening, reading, and especially history, were her passions.

Her loving and devoted husband, Pedro Torres Cantu; parents, Ramon, Sr., and Estela Loza Gonzales; sisters Berta de la Paz, Connie Gonzales, Lilia Barber, and Beatriz Garza; and brother, Roberto Gonzales, preceded her in death.

Survivors include her five sons Hector (Maria) Cantu, Sr. of San Benito, Rodolfo “Roy” (Lucila) Cantu, Sr. of Mission, Arturo (June) Cantu of San Antonio, Oscar (Minerva) Cantu, Sr. of Brownsville, and Joel Cantu of Mission; sister, Adela Barrera of Harlingen; brothers, Manuel Gonzales of Buda, Texas and Ramon Gonzales, Jr. of Elote, Texas; as well as sixteen grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Visiting hours are on Friday, August 7, 2015, beginning at one o’clock in the afternoon and concluding at nine o’clock at night, with a recitation of the holy rosary to begin at seven o’clock Friday evening within the San Benito Funeral Home Chapel, 1400 West Highway 77, San Benito, Texas 78586.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at ten o’clock in the morning, in Our Lady, Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, 1425 N. Sam Houston Boulevard, San Benito, Texas 78586.

Committal services will then follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons Hector Cantu, Jr., Oscar Cantu, Jr., Todd Cantu, David Cantu, Rodolfo “Rudy” Cantu, Jr., and Danny Cantu. Grandsons Robert Cantu, Sr., Richard A. Cantu, Troy Cantu, and Orlando Cantu, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
