HARLINGEN, TX --
Sue H. Hatfield of Harlingen died July 27, 2011 in Valley Baptist Hospital after a two-year struggle with cancer. She was 80.
She was a native of Huntington, WV and a resident of the Camelot retirement community in Harlingen. She is survived by her husband and former Harlingen City Commissioner and Valley Morning Star executive Jack Hatfield and their son, Dan, who is the editorial page editor of the Bay Area News Group-East Bay in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as her cousin Dr. Carole Vickers, who is the retired dean of education at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., and a current resident of Camelot.
Sue also is survived by her grandchildren Kelly Hatfield, a fashion merchandizing major at the Art Institute of Seattle in Seattle, Wash.; Jeff Hatfield, a junior criminal justice major at the University of Nevada in Reno, Nev.; and Erica Hatfield, a drama and music major at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon.
She was preceded in death by her mother Blanche Holloway in 1987 and her father Samuel Holloway in 1947.
For the past 58 years Sue has been an active and devoted member of Episcopal churches in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Florida and Texas. Since 1981, when she and her husband moved to Harlingen, Sue has been a vital contributor to St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Harlingen. She served that church as a faithful member of the altar guild, an organizer of senior luncheons and many other special events. She also served on the selection committee when St. Alban's selected David Reed as its priest. Reed is currently Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of West Texas.
Sue graduated from Huntington High School in 1948 and attended Marshall University, both in Huntington, W.Va., which is where she met her husband of 61 years.
During the eight years she and Jack lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. she was extremely active in the volunteer program at the Broward County General Hospital. There she devoted many volunteer hours to improving patient care and comfort.
She also worked for 20 years for American Greeting Card Co. stocking cards in various public displays throughout the valley. She had previously worked as a proof reader at the Butler Eagle newspaper in Butler, Pa.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday Aug. 4, 2011 at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, 1407 Austin in Harlingen. The service will be conducted by Bishop David Reed. Her ashes will be committed to the column-barium in the chapel at St. Alban's.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation in Sue's name to either the American Cancer Society or St. Alban's Church.
