Stuart Coleman Mayo, 82, passed away Friday, August 14, 2015 at his residence in Harlingen.
Stuart was born on January 27, 1933 in Kingsville, TX to Coleman C. Mayo and Anna Belle Goode Mayo. He graduated from HM King High School in Kingsville as the Valedictorian and later graduated from Texas A & I University as the Salutatorian with a BA in Accounting. He later served in the United States Army where he was a Specialist Third Class/Army Auditor.
Stuart was a longtime Certified Public Accountant where he first was a Partner with Mothershead, Hamilton, Day & Mayo and later a Partner and of Counsel with Long Chilton, LLP. He was very active in civic and clubs those being the Six Shooters Club, Rotary Club, Texas AICPA, Literacy Center of Harlingen, Valley Rehabilitation & Treatment Center, Loaves & Fishes, and the Boys and Girls Club. He received many awards and two that he was very proud of were the Harry J. Feldman Award and the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He also was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen where he served on the Administrative Board and numerous committees.
Stuart had many hobbies which included working cross-word puzzles and watching sports. His favorite was tennis which he was still playing on a weekly basis with his many friends. He was a member of the US Tennis Association and the Super Seniors Tennis in Brownsville.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gertrude (Trudi) Mayo of Harlingen; daughters, Bridget Mayo Henderson (Gary) of Kerrville, TX, Allison Mayo Thompson of Salado, TX, and Carin Mayo Adams of Harlingen; grandchildren; Julianne Henderson of Dallas, TX, Danielle Henderson of Lubbock, TX, Hawk Mayo Thompson of Salado, TX, Chance Thompson (Lauren) of Conroe, TX, Ashley Thompson Furst (Jerry) of Nolanville, TX, Courtney Adams of Harlingen; great grandchildren; Blaise and Kaia Furst , Kason Thompson; sisters; Lynn Mayo Johnson of Dallas, TX and Ruth Mayo Grossman (Junior) of Victoria, TX; numerous special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation hours will be held from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the family receiving guests from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Monday, August 17, 2015 at the funeral home.
A celebration of Stuart’s life will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, 2:00 PM, Tuesday, August 18, 2015 with the Rev. David Payne officiating. Private burial will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Serving as Honorary Pallbearers will be Larry Elliff, John Anderson, Dudley Blakeney, Coach James Myers, Billy Joe Day, Merlyn Koch, Fred Lister, Gary Henderson, Tony Adams and Junior Grossman.
