Stephen "Steve" K. Scoggins

May 12, 1965 — October 5, 2017

Stephen "Steve" K. Scoggins left this world too soon at the age of 52 on October 5, 2017 in Harlingen, Texas following a long battle with multiple health issues.  Steve, son of Kenneth E. and Ruth Scoggins, was born on May 12, 1965 in Harlingen, where he lived all his life.  He graduated from University Preparatory School and attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.

Steve was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth and survived by his mother Ruth, sisters, Shalmir (husband, Wolf) Benner and Karen Scoggins, nephews, John (wife, Kimberly) Benner and Ken (wife, Angela) Benner and their respective children Lauren, Brock and Alyssa, as well as many friends whom he was close to all his life.

Steve was a cotton and grain farmer in the Rio Hondo area and enjoyed entertaining friends at barbecues and white wing hunts at the farm.  Steve loved dogs, volunteer coaching, classic rock music, partying at concerts, jet skiing in the resaca, hunting, fishing, playing his guitar and singing by the campfire or occasional wedding when inspired.  He was passionate about all sports but especially his beloved Houston Astros and Dallas Cowboys and never gave up hope for that world series win (go 'Stros!).  People gravitated toward Steve's fun-loving nature; he was the organizer of hunting and fishing trips, football nights, baseball trips to see the Astros, South Padre Island outings and various misadventures with his friends (you know who you are!) for many years.

Steve knew someone everywhere he went, very stubborn by nature but always ready with a wry grin, snappy retort or hug (as long as you didn't tell him what to do).  Steve was never happier than grilling his legendary brisket, steaks and cooking a big pot of "Steve's Beans" for his family and friends (sadly his secret ingredient has yet to be revealed).

Visitation hours will be from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen with funeral services at 4:00 PM on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Mont Meta Memorial Park Mausoleum in San Benito.

Honorary Pallbearers for the service are John Benner, Ken Benner, Kevin Brackmeyer, Bo Boykin, Jason Mann, Frank Matz, Trace Maurin, Steve Shed, Barry Waters and Mike Zanca.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations may be made to Sunny Glen Children's Home, P.O. Box 1373, San Benito, Texas 78586.

Steve's absence will be keenly felt the rest of our lives but he lives on in our memories and hearts.  We love you Steve.
