Steve Gerber went to his Lord on October 11, 2024. Steve was born in New York, New York on October 31, 1945.
Steve joined the Boy Scouts of America as soon as he could join the Cub Scouts. He was active in Scouting advancing to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was awarded the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow.
Steve attended Northern Illinois University. Upon graduation he began his career in the Boy Scouts of America. He interrupted that career during the Vietnam War to answer our nation’s call serving in the United States Army. Upon his honorable separation from the Army, Steve returned to a career in Scouting. Steve served in councils across the United States rising in ever increasing positions of responsibility and leadership. In 1995, Steve became the Scout Executive of the Rio Grande Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It was during this timeframe that Steve agreed to be the “temporary” Scout Master of Troop 22 of the Marine Military Academy until a permanent Scout Master could be found. He held this “temporary position” for seven years. In 2004, Steve was transferred to Florida and again to Colorado where he served until his retirement in 2011.
Steve returned to Harlingen and made it his home. Steve was dedicated to giving back to his community. He was an active and loyal member of the Rotary Club of Harlingen and a holder of the Paul Harris award. Steve was the Assistant Scout Master of Troop 22 and the sponsor of the Marine Military Academy’s Interact Club teaching young men the importance of the Rotary motto of Service Above Self and giving back to one’s community.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother Kate Gerber and his father Harry John Gerber. He is survived by his brother Richard Gerber, his niece Elaine Gerber and his nephew John Gerber.
A celebration of life will be held at the Marine Military Academy on November 16, 2024, at 11:00 am.
Steve requested that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Marine Military Academy.
