Stanley B. Fisher

January 18, 1918 — April 2, 2008

HARLINGEN:
Stanley “Bert” Burton Fisher (90) went to his eternal rest on April 2, 2008.  He was born to Stanley and Etta Fisher on January 18, 1918 in Ashville, North Carolina, later moving to Washington State where he completed his elementary and secondary education, graduating from Hoquiam High School in the city of Hoquiam.
After serving seven years in the United States Army Signal Corps, Bert Fisher enrolled in the College of Puget Sound, earning his undergraduate degree in 1955.  He then devoted himself to a career in the aerospace industry.  In 1976 he relocated to Harlingen, Texas due to his wife’s fragile health and her desire to live nearer to family.  He entered a new career field and was a senior instructor at Texas State Technical College, until his retirement at age 70.  Even then, his love of teaching continued and he served as both a short and long-term substitute teacher for the Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District and Marine Military Academy until the age of 84, when failing health forced him to limit his activity.
Bert loved music and was an ardent harmonica player.  He could rarely be seen in public without his harmonica tucked away in a pocket.  Former students have often told the story of how he would reward good performance or conduct in a class by breaking out his harmonica and taking requests for various musical selections.  This practice of playing the harmonica continued during the final six years of his life when he was a resident at the Good Samaritan Home.  He played at all of the home’s social gatherings, at every birthday celebration and was even asked to play the National Anthem at the opening of the Senior Olympics, which he participated in and earned medals.
Stanley Fisher was preceded in death by his wife of 31 years, Vesta Mae.  He is survived by two brothers, Vernon (Sylvia) Fisher and Bill Fisher, a sister, Jean Fix, stepsons Thomas (Pattie) Segel, Nathan (Joan) Segel,  step daughter Darlene Mauldin, grandchildren Jason (Jodi) Segel, Lorie (John Martinez) Sanders, John (Sara) Sanders, Susan Sanders, Robert Segel, Kenneth (Candice) Segel, Tracy (Dave) Wickland and 12 great grandchildren.
Memorial Services will be held at Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church on Monday, April 7, 2008 at 2 p.m.  He will be laid to rest at the New Tacoma Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington.
