LOS FRESNOS, TX:
Simm Allen Powell, 74, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.
Simm was born September 22, 1933 in Dallas, Texas to Francis W. Powell and Ruby Gaylor Powell. He had an Associates Degree in Business and was employed by Marathan Leterourneu Amfels as a Licensed Boat Captain for 20 years. Simm served his country with the U.S. Coast Guard during Vietnam and Korean Conflict receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars and Vietnam Campaign Commendation. He retired from U.S. Coast Guard after 20 years of service as a Senior Chief Executive Officer.
Simm also served his community as a volunteer firefighter, a Little League Baseball Coach and a Boy Scout Leader. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and bragging about his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Francis W. Powell and sister, Marilyn (Ronald) Milke.
Simm is survived by his wife, Kathleen I. Powell, his mother, Ruby McKelvey; his son, Simm (Robin) Powell, Jr.; daughter, Terra (James) Van Gorkom; and grandchildren, Kelsey Van Gorkom, James Van Gorkom, Simm Powell III, Eddie Joe Powell, and Kelli Powell. Also surviving are his two brothers, Jakey (Wanda) Powell and Jack (Leasa) Powell and four sisters, Mary Wiley, Joan (Duane) Garrett, Harriett (Fred) Lowrey and Linda (Sam) Moody
Visitation will be held Sunday, December 30, 2007 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held Monday, December 31, 2007, 10 a.m., at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery, 2520 S. Inspiration Road, Mission, TX with Rev. David Mann officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jakey Powell, Jack Powell, Rick Mathes, Vicente Herrera, Ismael Atkinson, Guy Anderson, Harry Aguilar, Tony Gonzalez, Simm Powell III, Eddie Jo Powell, and James Vangorkom.
The family would like to thank Dr. Joseph-Leslie Pean for the years of excellent care given to Simm.
