Harlingen:
Seward G. Smith, 97, passed away Saturday, February 26, 2011 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
Seward was born in Rochester, NY on February 27, 1913 to Ralph Ward Smith and Zula Monarch Smith. He attended Cornell University for 3 years and later graduated from Niagara University, earning a BBA degree. During World War II he was employed as a CPA by the Rochester Army Ordinance District.
Seward married Helen Barden in 1938 and they had twin children, Ann Barden and Peter Monarch Smith. The family moved to the Rio Grande Valley in 1948, where Seward opened a CPA office and spent many years doing auditing, filing income taxes and general accounting. Helen passed away in 1958 and he later married Donald Cocke Smith who died in 1995.
Seward was active in the First Presbyterian Church for 57 years and served as an elder for many years. He was an active member and past-president of the local chapter of the Texas Society of CPA’s and the Kiwanis Club of Harlingen. He also enjoyed golf and was a former member of the Harlingen Country Club.
He is survived by his son, Peter Smith; son-in-law, Thomas Akins; grandsons, Bryce and Andrew Smith, Curt Akins; several great-grandchildren and his sister, Jane Joslyn. He also was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann Akins in 1997 and his brother, Bruce.
Visitation hours will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Tuesday, March 1, 2001 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 11:00 AM, Wednesday, March 2, 2011 with the Rev. Justin Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.
