Serena Walker, 88, passed away on Sunday, May 10, 2015 in Ft. Worth, Texas, where she had been living near her family. She was born on February 5, 1927, to Leslie and Euretha Mauney Smith in Harlingen, Texas.
After graduating from Harlingen High School, Serena attended the University of Texas where she met Harold Walker, who would become her husband on December 8, 1949. Harold’s military career in the Air Force took them to many places and eventually to Albuquerque, New Mexico. During these years, Serena completed her B. S. in Education from UTPA and began her teaching career. Harold and Serena had their son Dwight Walker shortly before returning to settle down in Harlingen.
Serena’s career in education spanned 30 years. She taught 3rd grade at Travis Elementary and Sam Houston Elementary. Eventually, she became the principal at Sam Houston serving there from 1968 to 1988 when she retired. While at Sam Houston, she completed her Master of Administration and Supervision, also from UTPA.
Serena was an active member at First Baptist Church in Harlingen, a member of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma society of women educators.
Serena was a positive person who encouraged people to live their lives faithful to God and to do their best at whatever they do.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Euretha Smith; her husband, Lt. Col. Harold Walker; her brother, WL Edgar Smith; her sister-in-law, Wanita Smith; and her niece, Mary Smith Gault.
Serena is survived by her son, Rev. Dwight E. Walker and wife Kathy Walker; granddaughter Lizz Walker Jones and husband Brandon Jones; grandson Daniel E. Walker; brothers Starks Smith; Berry Smith and numerous nieces and nephews, extended family, friends, and neighbors.
A viewing is scheduled on Saturday, May 23, 2015, from 10:00 to 12:00 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 N. Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, Texas. The funeral will be held later on Saturday, May 23, 2015, at 2:00 PM at Buck Ashcraft Chapel.
