Seferino P. Rodriguez

Rio Hondo, TX: Seferino Perales Rodriguez, 91 a life time resident of Rio Hondo passed away on September 15, 2011. He was born on February 12, 1920 at El Paso Real.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Guadalupe and Dionicia Rodriguez; his wife, Marina Rodriguez; his brothers, Agapito Rodriguez, Gonzalo Rodriguez, Pedro Rodriguez, and Jesus Rodriguez; and his sisters, Isabel Hinojosa, Guadalupe Ferriera, and Rita Garza.

Seferino is survived by his brothers, Gregorio Rodriguez of Brownsville, and Juan Rodriguez of San Benito; and his sisters, loving companions, Rosa P. Rodriguez of Rio Hondo and Maria Luisa R. Benavides of San Benito, whom he shared loving times together “three inseparable”; along with numerous nieces and nephews who he was known as the “favorite uncle”; and his stepchildren, Gloria, Isabel, and Adelina.

At the age of 5, he carried a banner of the “Virgin the Guadalupe” and was known as the valley’s first Guadalupano; Seferino went to fight in WWII as a teenager with 4 of his brothers, he was in the US Army Air Force; upon his discharge he continued his military association as an administrator at the Harlingen Air Force Base and was later employed by the United States Immigration Service.
His destiny took a turn when he decided to enter college at Brownsville Junior College; he is credited for naming Texas Southmost College. He earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education from Baylor University in 1952; he was a pioneer educator for 33 years at Harlingen, Raymondville, and Santa Rosa school districts. As a outspoken educator he was involved in the Association of Texas Professional Educators and the Texas Classroom Teachers Association; upon his retirement he researched and recorded local military and family history; his accomplishments have not gone without notice, within the last few decodes he has received various citations from President Ronald Reagan, the Texas State Senate and President, then Governor George w. Bush.

Visitations will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2011 from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with a Holy Rosary prayed at 7:00 P.M. at San Benito Funeral Home.

The funeral precession will depart San Benito Funeral Home on Monday, September 19, 2011  at 9:30 A.M. for a 10:00 A.M. Catholic Funeral Service at St. Helen Catholic Church in Rio Hondo.  Interment will follow to Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Pallbearers will be Felix Rodriguez, Tony Garza, Albert Yanez, Ernesto Benavides, Jesus Benavides and Mike Benavides; honorary pallbearer will be Juan P. Rodriguez, Seferino S. Rodriguez, and Manuel Rodriguez

The family would like to send a “Special Thanks” to Odyssey Hospice and to Sunshine Haven in Olmito.
