Brownsville, TX- Mr. Santos G. Gomez, July 17, 1923- July 17, 2014, 91, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and great uncle; entered into the glory of eternal life on Thursday, July 17, 2014 at the Sunshine Haven Inc, 7105 West Lakeside Blvd. in Olmito, Texas.
Santos was preceded in death by his parents Tirso Gomez and Casimira Gonzales Gomez; his sisters Matilde G. Leal, Clara McDonald, Estela Trevino, Amelia Ruiz, Emilia Gomez; his brother Calixto Gomez.
Santos, loved by family and friends was the seventh child born to Tirso Gomez and Casimira Gonzales Gomez at the “Rancho la Union”, later to be known as “El Calaboz”, a small community of San Benito, Texas.
Santos, also referred to as “John Wayne” by many, was well known throughout Brownsville and San Benito. Santos’ best attribute was the willingness to help his family and friends in need and for his generosity to all.
Santos was also an avid hunter, a person who was always ready to go deer hunting. Santos always enjoyed having lunch at Vicky’s Restaurant in San Benito where he visited with family and friends.
Santos is survived by his loving wife of 70 years: Maria Luz Gomez; his four sons, Joel (Kristin) Gomez, Daniel (Dora) Gomez, Santos Jr. (Yolanda) Gomez, Lionel (Mary Alice) Gomez; his daughter Irene (Juan) Ybarra and his sister, Ester Polanco. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and the Rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, 2014 at the San Benito Funeral Home. The time for Mass of Christian Resurrection will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 21, 2014 at the St. Ignatius Church in El Ranchito, Texas on Hwy 281. Interment will follow at the “Isidro Leal” Memorial Cemetery in San Pedro, TX.
Serving as pallbearers will be Edwardo McDonald, Eucebio McDonald, Daniel Gomez Jr., Benjamin Gomez, Manuel Lucio and Samuel Lucio. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joel Gomez, Daniel Gomez, Santos Gomez Jr., Lionel Gomez and George Lucio.
Santos will be greatly missed. This legacy will continue through his family and friends and all the lives he touched through his generosity. He gave thanks to God every day for his wonderful life.
