Samuel Cutter Carter, Jr., M.D. died Wednesday, September 09, 2009 at the age of 92.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years Eva Meador Carter on March 20, 2009.
Dr. Carter is survived by his children, Samuel Cutter Carter, III, daughter Isabelle “Cissy” Carter Rotter Duane and her husband, Pat Duane of Houston, and Elizabeth Carter Cantini. His grandchildren are Dr. David H. Rotter and his wife Ann, Kendra K. Carter, Jennifer Rotter, Russell Carter Cantini, and 2nd Lt. Ryan Kendrick Cantini.  His great grandchildren are Nathan Carter, Trent August and Andrew David, children of David and Ann Rotter.  He is also survived by his sister Isabelle Louise Carter of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He was born August 20, 1917 in New Orleans to Samuel Cutter Carter and Bessie Ruth Leake Carter.  After the death of his parents he attended middle school at St. Andrew’s in Sewanee, Tennessee.  At age 15 he moved to Memphis to live with the Uhlhorn family, home of his mother’s first cousin, T.G. Uhlhorn.  He graduated with honors from Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes University) as a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, then from the University of Tennessee Medical School where he met his wife Eva. They were married on March 30, 1943.
Dr. Carter completed a rotating internship at Carney Hospital, Boston, a Harvard affiliate.  He finished his surgical residency in 1948 in Memphis where he began his private practice as a thoracic surgeon.  In 1958 he moved to Harlingen, Texas and became Chief of Surgery at Harlingen State Tuberculosis Hospital.  He began practicing at Valley Baptist Hospital (VBMC), was board certified in internal medicine and a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians.  His former office is the Carter Professional Office Building adjacent to VBMC.
He served as a physician for the City of Harlingen Police and Fire Departments, and for American Airlines—Valley Region.  At Valley Baptist he was chief of family practice and a member of the Ethics Committee.  An experienced pilot with over 5,000 hours in Central and North America he was a FAA Flight Physician, a member of Flying Physicians, and the Confederate Air Force, as well as Regional Associate of the Aircraft Owner’s and Pilot Association.  In addition to flying his interests were hunting, fishing, and world travel which included visits to all seven continents.
The family will receive visitors from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas.  Memorial services will be held at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at 2 p.m. followed by the reception.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Thomas Klug, Grady W. “Billy” Massey, Randy Baker, Dr. Abraham Cano, Lewis R. Donelson, III, Dr. Garner Klein, and Dr. David Woolweaver.
