Sadie A. Rogers

August 20, 1917 — May 1, 2011

Mercedes, TX:
Sadie Audelle Rogers, age 93, passed away on May 1, 2011 in Harlingen, TX following a lengthy illness.  She was born on August 20, 1917 in Roosevelt, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Luther Gordon McNutt and Birdie Lee Williams McNutt.  Mrs. Rogers was fondly called “Babe” or “Auntie Babe” by family and friends.
Mrs. Rogers was a long time resident of Mercedes, TX and was a member of the Church of Christ there. More recently she attended the Eighth and Harrison Church of Christ in Harlingen, TX.
Upon graduation from Bishop High School, she attended (Beauty School or Beauty College) where she met Harry Armstrong whom she married in 1937. He preceded her in death in 1951.  During World War II, she became a welder at the shipyard in Houston, TX. Throughout her lifetime, she often expressed how much she enjoyed that experience. After the war, she and Harry moved to Mercedes, TX, where they soon bought a home. For a brief time, she worked in a beauty shop.  After that, she worked at a packing shed and finally at Sinclair’s Drug Store.
In 1954, Sadie married H.B. Rogers, Sr.  At that time, she became a stay at home housewife.  This gave her time to pursue her interest in art and take lessons from Norma Knight.  She shared her art with family and friends and enjoyed participating in art shows. Sadie also played the piano by ear. She gave herself and the family much pleasure when using this gift.  Mr. Rogers was a fruit and vegetable buyer. Together, they enjoyed their camper and vacationing in New Mexico and Colorado during the off season.  He preceded her in death in 1976.
In addition to her parents, Sadie was preceded in death by her brother James Theo “J.T.” McNutt and two sisters Winelle Hartwick and Hazel Mozelle McKim.
Survivors include her two nieces, Joy Pearson of Harlingen, TX and Jean (DeVoy) Shaw of Boling, TX.  She is also survived by numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Mrs. Rogers’ neighbors, Ernest, Cristina and Sammy Bocanegra for their kindness in caring and looking out for her well-being over the years.
Private graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 4, 2011, 10 a.m., at Ebony Grove Cemetery in Mercedes, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
