Ruth Steib, 86, passed away at 2:00 A.M., Saturday morning, February 3. Ruth was born October 15, 1920 in Kingston, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1941. She came to Texas with her husband, Michael Steib, and their three young children in 1945.
A gifted teacher, she taught at Durham's Business College, owned by Mike and Ruth from 1957 until 1981. After retiring, Ruth continued tot each as a volunteer for The Harlingen Literacy Center and the HOSTS Program. She received numerous awards for community service from local agencies, The Texas State Library, and The Texas House of Representatives. Ruth will be fondly remembered by the hundred of people she taught to read and speak English, and the dozens of children whom she coached to sucess.
Ruth became a world traveler in her later years, and entertained friends and family with stories of her travels to Europe, Africa, Egypt, China and point of interest in other lands.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Lois Pedigo of Louisville, Kentucky, her sons, and daughters-in-law, Michael Lee and Maria Steib of McAllen, and Steve B. Steib and Judi Cox-Steib of Tulsa, Oklahoma, her daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Tim Arnold of Austin and her husband Geoff Reid, David Steib, Bonnie Arnold Fisher and her husband Andy Fisher, Matt Arnold, her great granddaughter, Samantha Reid, and her granddaughter, betsy Gaines, who lived with and cared for Ruth for the past five years.
A gathering of family and friends will be held at Ruth's home at 709 East Filmore in Harlingen on Sunday, February 11, between the hours of 2:00 and 6:00 P.M. Al who remember Ruth are invited to come by, view pictures and remembrances from Ruth's life, and share stories with her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations in her name be made to Harlingen Literacy Center Inc., 101 East Monroe, Harlingen, Texas 78550.
