Ruth Irene Hunter passed from this life May 16, 2016 in Brownsville, Texas. She was 61 years old.
Ruth was born November 9, 1954 in El Paso, Texas to Darwin and Arless Lingerfelt Earle, and her family moved to Brownsville in 1955. During her childhood, she spent many summers at the family farm near Cheyenne, Oklahoma. She was a competitive swimmer and attended Brownsville High school, where she was active in the choir, including a European Choir Tour, and graduated in 1972. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where she could be found among the Church Belles and often sang in the choir. For many years, she was a Girl Scout Leader, swim coach, and active in Zonta Club. She enjoyed travel and maintaining close contacts with her extended Earle and Lingerfelt families. Through the years, she worked at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Omega Hospice, the University of Texas-Brownsville and other organizations, all of which included her trademark compassion for others that she will be remembered for. Her most recent employment was as the Executive Director of Good Neighbor Settlement House - an opportunity she treasured because helping others was her favorite thing to do.
Ruth is survived by her mother, Arless Earle, her children Jacob (Jenn), Christopher (Veronica) and Jayme (Robert), and grandchildren Taylor, Savannah, Riley, Walter, and Charlotte, and her siblings Wayne (Linda) Earle, Frank (Margaret) Earle, and Lloyd (Amy) Earle. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and her boyfriend Marcus Blackwell. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Darwin Earle, and several aunts and uncles.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 6:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church, 1225 Boca Chica Boulevard, Brownsville.
