Kenneth Terry, 85, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2015 in Harlingen, Texas. He was born on October 25, 1930 in Shreveport, Louisiana to Robert Adolphus and Iva Lucille Terry.
Kenneth is survived by his faithful friend of 35 years, Joy Pearson of Harlingen, Texas; daughters, Laura Terry Mason of San Marcos, Texas and Dana Terry Shaw (Wayne) of Kingsland, Texas; son, Roy Kenneth Terry, Jr. (Durenda) of Leander, Texas; grandchildren, Brittany Shaw, Ginger Shaw Cowe, Wayne Edward Shaw all of Kingsland, Texas, Rory and Randy Terry both of Leander, Texas; great grandchildren, Emmaryee and Emmilyee Roberson, Jaidyn and Sophia Cowe, and Scarlet Terry; brother, Robert Terry (Betsy); sisters, Ruth Allcock, Catherine Alderson and Mary Sue Lanier (Fred); and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Virginia Brackin Terry; sister, Naomi Richey; brothers-in-law, Denver Allcock, Monroe Richey, and Hubert Alderson; niece Diane Jongema, and nephew, Gary Alderson.
After graduating from college, Kenneth jumped right into his chosen profession of teaching. During the course of his teaching career, he taught all ages from the very young to high school level. He especially enjoyed teaching Science. He had an amazing gift of incorporating Science with Life Lessons. As several of his nieces and nephews could confirm, he was a teacher who made a lasting impression on his students. Over the summer months, he sought employment using his many skills.
On August 20, 1960, he married Mary Virginia Brackin. They made their home and raised the children in Harlingen, Texas. In the early years of their marriage, Kenneth put his carpentry skills to good use building an addition to a church in Tuleta, Texas. Over the years as he raised his children, he was very involved in their lives serving as PTA President, 4-H Leader and Softball Coach just to name a few. He led by example and was the best father anyone could ever want.
Kenneth was a devoted Christian man and a member of the First Church of the Nazarene where he sang in the Church Choir for many years.
He was a man of many skills from building houses to the smallest of home repairs. He was always eager to lend a helping hand to those in need. Many took comfort in knowing his help was just a phone call away.
After retirement, he filled his time with many volunteer projects as a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge. He very much enjoyed working alongside his fellow Elks. He held the friendships he developed there very dear to his heart.
His smile, twinkling blue eyes and kind nature will be missed by many. Although he is no longer with us, he lives with our Lord and suffers no more!
A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at 11:00 a.m., at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home, 710 Ed Carey Dr., Harlingen, Texas. A private burial was held at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First Church of the Nazarene, 2001 North 7th, Harlingen, Texas 78550 or the charity of choice.
