Dr Robert O. Collier

January 5, 1945 — June 23, 2010

Harlingen, TX:
Dr. Robert Oran Collier, 65, passed away June 23, in Harlingen. A long-time resident of Harlingen, he had a psychiatry practice serving the Valley area for more than 30 years.
Dr. Collier was born January 5, 1945 in Hallettsville, Texas to Oran W. and Ellyn M. Collier. He spent his earliest years in Nicaro, Cuba, where his dad worked as an engineer for Nicaro Nickel. When he was three, the family moved to La Marque, Texas. There, in Galveston County, Dr. Collier began his lifelong avocation as an avid outdoorsman with a treasured group of fellow hunting and fishing friends. His love of the outdoors continued into his adult life in Harlingen, where again he forged lifelong friendships with a remarkable group of fellow hunting and fishing enthusiasts.
He also enjoyed a lifetime devotion to sports, first as a talented high school football and baseball player, and later as an avid fan of all sports, particularly those involving his children and grandchildren.  In Harlingen, he also became an active participant in amateur tennis, which he enjoyed throughout his adult life.
Dr. Collier had a great reverence and appreciation for the waterways and ecosystems of the Rio Grande Valley.  He became an ardent defender of the South Texas environment, taking on polluters with unflinching zeal in the courts and commissions of Austin.
Dr. Collier was a graduate of La Marque High School, The University of Texas at Austin, and the UT Medical Branch at Galveston, where he also completed a psychiatry residency.
Dr. Collier was preceded in death by his father, Oran Collier; brother, George Collier and son, Christopher Collier.
He is survived by his mother, Ellyn Collier of Kerrville, sister Ruth Ann Long of Decatur, daughter and son-in-law Allison and Kamal Benhayoune of San Antonio, son Shane Collier of Harlingen, and grandsons Adam and Noah Benhayoune of San Antonio.
