Robert Dale Carr

December 28, 1938 — December 21, 2015

Rio Hondo, TX:
Robert Dale (Bob) Carr passed away peacefully on Dec 21st, 2015 in Harlingen, Texas after a long battle with illness.  Bob was born on December 28th, 1938 in Beaver Crossing, Nebraska to parents Dale and Norma Carr. He spent his childhood and early adult years in the area, graduating from Beaver Crossing High School in 1956.  He attended the University of Nebraska before going to work for Burlington Northern Railroad. After suffering an injury in a railroad accident, he returned to Lincoln Nebraska to work at Gould Industries where he learned the cabinet making and woodworking trades. During this time, he started courting the love of his life, Sharon K. Flowerday. They were married in Beaver Crossing on June 14th, 1959.  At that time Bob told Sherry he wanted to have 3 sons five years apart to help him with his carpentry business.  If she wanted any girls they would have to be born between the boys.  Michael was born in 1960, Douglas in 1965, and Patrick in 1970. Somehow the girls got skipped.
In 1961, Bob and Sherry moved from Lincoln back to Beaver Crossing and started BC Carpenter Shop.  At this time they also ran the West Blue Cafe in Beaver Crossing.  Over the next several years Bob built many custom homes in the area and his carpenter shop was busy building cabinets for those homes and many others.  During this time Bob also felt the Lord’s call on his life. In 1974, they sold everything they had in Nebraska and followed that call to help start Living Water Ranch Christian Retreat Center in Olsburg, Kansas. His many talents were put to use there as he built several buildings and ministered to people of all ages. In 1980 they left the Ranch and moved to Chapman, Kansas where he was a sales manager for Garnite Industries. In 1984 they moved to a warmer and dryer Sierra Vista, Arizona where they started Carr’s Insurance Agency.  This was the beginning of a long and successful career with Farmers Insurance that would carry them into their retirement years and eventually lead them to move to Buena Vista, Colorado in 2000. They lived there through their pre-retirement and retirement years until Bob’s declining health caused a permanent move to Hummingbird Cove RV Park in Rio Hondo, Texas in October of 2015, where they had spent the previous two winters. Bob enjoyed the park and its residents until going into the hospital on December 9th. He passed away peacefully on Monday, December 21st, 2015 after fighting the good fight for as long as his body would hold out. He was greeted in heaven by family and friends that went before him. Earth’s tremendous loss was heaven’s great gain!
Bob enjoyed many hobbies and activities, but none any more than visiting with people and sharing the good news of Jesus Christ. He never met a stranger and genuinely cared for those he befriended. But his favorites of all were his grandchildren; they were the lights and loves of his life. Nothing was more important to him than family and spending time together. He also had a passion for missions and reaching the lost. During his time in Arizona he was ordained as a pastor at Shiloh Christian Center and continued to minister to others until his last breath on earth. Countless lives were touched by his kindness, compassion, generosity and love for Jesus and others. He has left a void that will never be filled.
Bob is survived by his wife, partner, best friend and companion of 56 years, Sherry.  Also by sons Michael (wife Joyce) of Buena Vista, Colorado, Douglas (wife Devon) of Monument, Colorado, and Patrick (wife Carissa) of Rio Hondo, Texas.  Also 8 Grandchildren; Bradley,(wife Joy) Caleb, Christopher (wife Mary), Nathan, Daniel, Hannah, Abigail and Addicus, and 2 great-grandchildren, Anna and Matthew. He is also survived by his sister Judy Stutzman and numerous in-laws, nephews, nieces and cousins. Bob and Sherry also had many “foster” children from all parts of the country that they helped and supported over the years. It is almost impossible to count the number of people that called him Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Pastor and friend over the years. His legacy of love and caring will extend into eternity.
There will be a Celebration of Life Service for Bob on Tuesday, December 29th at 11:00 at Hummingbird Cove RV Park in Rio Hondo, Texas. There will also be another service on January 9th at 11:00 at Cornerstone Church in Buena Vista, CO.  Cards and remembrances can be sent to the family at 32637 FM 2925 #162, Rio Hondo, TX 78583 or PO Box 1365, Buena Vista, CO 81211.
