Rickie A. Janssen
Harlingen, TX –
Rickie Allan Janssen, 55, went to be with our heavenly father on January 4, 2012 at his home surrounded by family, after a long courageous battle with esophageal cancer.
Rickie was born on July 23, 1956 to Heino and Geneva Janssen in Port Sulphur, LA. In 1957, the Janssen family moved to Lyford, TX.
He graduated from Lyford High School in 1974.
Rickie was a former student of Texas A&M University and member of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band.
In 1976, Rickie married Cheryl Grover and resided in Harlingen for more than 35 years.
Rickie joined John Deere in 1977, where he was a Parts Manager in Harlingen. In 1985, Rickie began working for his father-in-law in the family business, Craig's Furniture, where he most recently served as President and Part Owner.
Rickie was an active supporter of the 4-H and FFA youth of the Rio Grande Valley. He served as Chairman of the Rabbit Committee for the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show, former President of the Harlingen Beef Club, and former Club Leader of Town & Country 4-H.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Heino and Geneva Janssen.
He is survived by wife, Cheryl, and their children: Ryan (Jessica) Janssen of Harlingen, Kristen Janssen of Dallas and Lauren Janssen of Mansfield. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, Emily and Avery Janssen of Harlingen.
He is also survived by his brother Mike (Carol) Janssen and niece, Jennifer Janssen, of Houston and his aunt, Editha Logan of Lubbock.
Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 6 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.
The funeral procession will depart the Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rickie Janssen Memorial Scholarship Fund serving the 4-H and FFA youth. Checks can be made payable to the Rickie Janssen Memorial Scholarship Fund to Harlingen Area Teacher’s Credit Union, C/O Missy Morrow, 2910 E. Grimes, Harlingen, TX 78550.
