Harlingen:
Maj. Richard “Dick” E. Smith, 84, passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen, TX.
Dick was born on May 3, 1929 in Kokomo, IN to Charles and Olive (Spangler) Smith.  He graduated from Kokomo High School in 1947 and soon after joined the United States Army as a Private.  In 1971 Dick retired from the US Army as a Major.
Dick was a member of the Chicago Carpenter Union #250 from 1971 to 1997 and then was self employed restaurant owner from 1997 to 2000.  He was a life member of the VFW Post #5117 in Carthage, IL where he was a Past Cmdr., life member of the American Legion Post #0439 in La Feria, TX and a member of the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889 where he was a past Exalted Ruler and past Secretary. He also was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, TX.
Dick is survived by his wife, Nancy Jeanie Smith of Harlingen, TX; daughters, Debbie (Rick) McFall of Kokomo, IN, and Diana (James) Arnold of Geneva, IN, Elizabeth (Steve) Gentry of Kokomo, IN; step-son John (Martha) Brock of Coppel, TX; 9 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren and special nephew, Bill Willis of Loda, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Billy Bob, sister, Iona Smith Miller, sister, Lois E. Willis, and brother-in-law, William F. Arnett, Jr.
A memorial service for Dick will be held at the Harlingen Elks Lodge, at 2 p.m., on February 16, 2014.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889, First United Methodist Church in Harlingen, or the Wounded Warriors Project.
The family wishes to thank Odyssey Hospice in Harlingen, TX and Harlingen Medical Center for all their care and concern for Dick and his family.
