Richard Dunbar

Richard (Dick) H. Dunbar passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013 in Harlingen, Texas. He was born in Canton, Ohio on June 17, 1919 to Milo H. and Florence M. Edwards Dunbar. He was a 12th generation descendant of Richard Warren, a Mayflower passenger of the Plymouth landing in New England, in 1620. Richard’s father owned a repair and servicing battery business named Dunbar Brothers Company in Canton, Ohio, until he retired in 1947. Richard and his 2 brothers worked in the business in their late teens and early twenties. He and his family were very active in the Boy Scouts and he achieved the level of an Eagle Scout.
Richard graduated from McKinley High School in Canton, OH in 1937, and enrolled in a Co-op Program with Ohio Power Company and Cincinnati University to achieve an Electrical Engineering degree. His college studies were interrupted by being recruited by the U.S. Army Air Corps in December 1942, in the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. In 1943 he was assigned to the Harlingen Air Base Gunnery School. February 1946 he separated from the Army Air Corps as Captain. Years after WWII ended, he was in the Air Force Reserves ending his service as Major.
He married Jewel (Judy) Knight Dunbar, a resident of Harlingen on June 17, 1944. When the war ended in 1945, Richard began working in the automotive service business. Over the years he worked for Harlingen Motors Company, Ferguson Motor Company, Payne Motors, and Brookshire’s Tires. His work with Ferguson Motor Company totaled 31 years in various capacities. In October 1988 Richard joined the West Cameron County Chapter (South Texas Chapter) American Red Cross, serving in positions of Health and Safety Director, Assistant Director, and Interim Director until he retired in September 1998.
Richard and Judy were members of the First Presbyterian Church in Harlingen, and he served as a Deacon and Elder in the church from 1955 through the 1980s. He was very active in service to the Church and the Sheppard’s Center. He was also a member of the B.P.O.E. #1889 in Harlingen, the Arroyo Boat and Ski Club, and the Night Owls Dance Club.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Judy Dunbar; his daughter, Dixie Dunbar; a brother, Ted M. (Fran) Dunbar of Canton, Ohio; and a nephew and nieces.
Those who predeceased him are his parents, Milo and Florence Dunbar and a brother, Harley G. Dunbar.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the superior staff of Victoria House in Harlingen for their exceptional care and consideration in the last several months. Richard and Judy were residents of Canterbury Gardens for eight years and appreciated the staff’s courtesies and care while residing there.
Also, the family wishes to thank Odyssey Hospice staff, A & M Nursing staff, Dr. Robert Minor & staff, and Dr. Farley Neasman & staff for their kindness and outstanding care.
A memorial service is pending and will be announced at a later date.
