Dateline: Harlingen: Ray F. Burns, 92, passed away on May 9, 2009 in Houston, Texas.  Ray was born to Oyer and Nora Burns on September 11, 1916 in Tyler, Texas.  He and his family moved to the Harlingen area in 1920.
Ray married Wynelle Jones on August 24, 1935. Ray was the store manager of the submarine tender U.S.S. Proteus serving in the Pacific Fleet during World War II.  He also attended the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender in Tokyo Bay, Japan in 1945.
After the war, Ray moved back to Harlingen and worked in the produce business for Interstate Fruit and Vegetable Co. in La Feria, TX for 38 years.  Ray and Wynelle were members of the 1st Baptist Church in Harlingen, TX.  Ray served as a Deacon in the church for many years. Ray served as a 32nd degree Mason.
Ray loved all of his family very much.  He also loved to hunt, fish, watch football, and most of all, spend time with his family.
Ray is survived by his wife of 73 years Wynelle Burns, son, Mike Burns and wife Robin Fisher of Houston, TX; grandchildren; Staci Burns, Kendall Burns, Taylor Burns, Alexis Burns – all from Houston; Son, Bill Burns and wife Jennifer of Austin, TX; granddaughter:  Kelly Burns of Austin, Brothers; George Burns (Norma) of La Feria, Frank Burns (Wilma) of Harlingen, sisters; Thelma Jean Giese of Galveston, TX; Ethelen Howe of Tyler, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews
Visitation hours will be held from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Friday, May 15, 2009 with the family gathering from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel at the First Baptist Church in Harlingen, 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 16, 2009 with the Rev. Chris Hall officiating.  Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, TX.
Pallbearers will be family members, Keith Burns, Ricky Burns, Bobby J. Burns, Andy Burns, Levi Burns and Gene Catlatt.
The family request that those desiring to do so may make memorial donations to the First Baptist Church, 501 E. Van Buren, Harlingen, TX  78550 or to the Harlingen Elks Lodge #1889, 1426 S. Commerce, Harlingen, TX 78550.
