Rafael Delannoy-Vélez passed away on November 19, 2012 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, Texas. Throughout his illness and disability, Rafael remained a positive influence for all who knew him. His unconditional faith in Christ as His Saviour and Healer carried him through life. Rafael was born to Rafael Delannoy-Vega and Consuelo Vélez-Cordero on February 11, 1944, at San José Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
As a child Rafael participated actively in Iglesia Discípulos de Cristo and later in his youth became a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista de Puerto Nuevo, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He lived with his parents until 2006 when they both passed away in the summer of 2006. During the last six years he lived in Harlingen with his sister and brother-in-law, Ana Inés Delannoy-Vélez and Adalí Efraín Vélez. He has one nephew by the name of Efraín Edgardo Vélez who lives in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and is married to Lucy Guevara Vélez. Also surviving are his aunts, Josefa D. Vélez and her husband, Santos Vélez, Pilar S. Delannoy, Angie S. Delannoy and Raquel Cotti; cousins, Minerva Vélez, Austin Vélez, Carmen J. González, Miguel A. Juarbe; Luis E. Delannoy and family, Jorge Delannoy and family, Enrique Delannoy and family, Eduardo Delannoy and family, Ernesto Delannoy and family, Edgardo Delannoy and family and Esteban Delannoy and family.
He worshiped as a member of First Baptist Church in Harlingen, Texas and sang in the Senior Choir. His favorite Bible reading was Psalm 23. He enjoyed taking painting classes with Joy Fiegel.
Rafael graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, New York City, and took commercial courses and art classes in Puerto Rico. He worked with Vocational Rehabilitation Department in San Juan, Puerto Rico for twenty years as an office clerk and retired in 2000.
A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Harlingen, Texas on Friday, November 30, 2012 with Rev. Wade Hood officiating. Family will be receiving friends from 1 p.m. till service time. His ashes will be buried at Los Cipreses Cemetery in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, next to his parents’ remains.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Todd Shenkenberg, Dr. Emmanuel Akinyemi, Dr. Robert Minor, Dr. Victoria Pareda, Dr. Indal Seudeal, Dr. Leslie Pean, Dr. José Dones for their extraordinary care and concern for Rafael’s well-being; VBMC nursing staff and caregivers: Linda Rojas, Mary Valdez, Lupita Lopez, Mary Minor, Armando Peña, Martin Peña, and Polo Sanchez for their tender care during his last days.
