Rachel was born in Cerro Gordo, Little River County, Arkansas and lived there until her family moved to Harlingen at age 9.  After graduating from Harlingen High School, Rachel became a laboratory technician at Valley Baptist Hospital on “F” Street---a job she thoroughly enjoyed.  Rachel and George were married June 2, 1940 in the First Methodist Church (married 58 years).
When George was deployed during World War II, Rachel joined the family business: Pletcher’s Flower Shop and Nursery.  She became a very gifted floral designer and remained an integral part of the successful business.  When they sold the business in 1960, she joined George in their wholesale nursery business and remained active for many years.  Their specialty was ornamentals and palms.  They shipped palms all over the U.S. and had the privilege of furnishing palms for the entrance of the coliseum at the Olympics in Barcelona.  She along with George owned the GHP building.
Rachel had many interests.  She taught the Weslyann Sunday School Class for years at First United Methodist Church and was a member for over 75 years.  Rachel and George were members of 3 dance clubs.  She was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Child Guidance Club, 12:30 Club and PEO.  She tutored children in the Host Program at Wilson Elementary over 10 years and volunteered in the library at Treasure Hills Elementary.  Rachel and George loved to travel and visited all 50 states and many foreign countries. They shared the love of music of many generations and enjoyed theater, especially in London.
Rachel was known for her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor.  She was also interested in politics, geography, and current events.  Her biggest joy was her grandchildren and great grandchildren.  She loved to spoil them with breakfast in bed, swimming, and playing store.  Rachel was always eager to get down on the floor to play cars, go for walks, and sit on the swing with the grandchildren and sing songs.  She encouraged her family to be steadfast in their faith and pray over matters of concern.
Rachel was truly blessed with the wonderful care given to her by Martha’s Care Home (Martha, Mary, Eneida, Yvette, & Dora)
