JuaNita Brodecky, 85, passed away Thursday, August 4, 2011 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.
JuaNita was born November 27, 1926 on the Osage Indian Reservation in Oklahoma to Pleasant and Pauline Upshaw.  She spent her early years in Oklahoma, then moving to Oregon for a short time and finally to Rio Hondo.
JuaNita had many personal and professional highlights.  She was the City Secretary for the City of Rio Hondo from 1964 to 1968; Mayor for the City of Rio Hondo from 1973 to 1978; Past President of the Texas Municipal League, Region 12; Past Board Member of the Lower RGV Development Council; Past Executive Secretary with the National Foundation March of Dimes; Member and Past President, Cameron Co. Republican Women; Member and Past President of the Harlingen Area Business Alliance.
JuaNita also had many career highlights.  She was one of the contributors to “Texas Women in Politics” published in 1977; Owner/Manager of Sewing Fantastic Fashions in Harlingen in the 1960’s; Owr/Manager of Harlingen Snelling Employment Services from 1984 to 1995; Contributor to some 15 Newspapers located in several states; Talk show guest, guest host with radio and TV; Weekly columnist with Freedom Papers (Valley Morning Star).
JuaNita had many interest.  She loved to sew, collect different types of cactus and travel to see her grand kids.
JuaNita is survived by her husband, John Brodecky of Rio Hondo; daughter, Christine (Bagby) Heinrich of Rio Hondo;; 6 grandchildren, Melanie Heinrich of Houston, TX, John David Heinrich of Fredericksburg, TX, Patrick Heinrich of Smithville, TX, Heather Cox of Harlingen, Richard Ferrel of Houston, and Robert Ferrel of Houston; 4 great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews,  Edgar Schwarz of Sebastian, Carolyn Schwarz of Mercedes, Kathy Cowden of Mercedes, Daniel Schwarz of Rosenberg, TX .  She was preceded in death by her parents, daughters, Barbara Zoe Alexander and Claudia Cox, and sisters, Betty Schwarz, Lillie Nelson and Leona Coats.
Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the family receiving friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, August 12, 2011 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
A Celebration of JuaNita’s life will be held 3:00 PM, Saturday, August 13, 2011 at Rio Hondo Baptist Church in Rio Hondo with the Rev. Gene Horton officiating.  Burial will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Bates, Robert Elliff, Freddy Castaneda, Maximino Rivera, Gary (Bud) James, Eddie Schwarz, Daniel Schwarz, Doug Cox and Terry Bates.
