Ophelia M. Gregory

Ophelia McMillan Gregory was born in Amity, Arkansas on October 14, 1904 to John Arch and Dovie Susan McMillan.  She passed away on Saturday, December 9, 2006 at Retama Manor Nursing Home in Harlingen at the age of 102.
She was a resident of Little Rock, Arkansas until 1931, when she moved to the Lower Rio Grande Valley with her husband and two children.  The family lived in Santa Rosa and Edcouch until they moved to Harlingen in 1934. In 1994, she moved to Brownsville and made her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
She was one of the oldest living members of the First Baptist Church of Harlingen.  She is a life member of the American Legion Auxiliary.  For many years she sold poppies on “Main Street” on Veterans’ Day.  She was also a member of Du Bois-Hite Chapter of the NSDAR – Brownsville, Texas.
Ophelia was a homemaker who loved to cook and entertain family and friends.  Her hobbies included crocheting and quilting.
Our Nanny was very loved by her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and she will be missed by all.
She is survived by a daughter, Monica E. Monk of Harlingen; son, Donald M. (Billie Ruth) Gregory of San Antonio, Texas; grandchildren, Susan (Henry) Rogers of Little Rock, Arkansas, John T. (Ruth) Monk, III of Harlingen; Linda Gale Gregory of Bastrop, Texas and William Scott Gregory of The Woodlands, Texas; great-grandchildren, Christopher (Elizabeth) Rogers of Little Rock, Elizabeth (Jesse) English of Dallas, J. Thomas Monk IV of Mountain View, CA, Mary Katherine Monk of Houston, Ann Marie Monk of Santa Rosa, CA, Kelsey Acosta and Shelby Acosta of Bastrop, Victoria Gregory, Kenneth Gregory and Kevin Gregory of The Woodlands; nephew, Billy Frank (Lori) Mitcham of Huntsville, Texas; niece, Dana Smith of Little Rock.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marion T. Gregory; sister, Marjorie Smith; and twin sister Ouida Mitcham.
Visitation hours will be held from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with the family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, Friday, December 15, 2005 at the funeral home.
Graveside services only will be held at Mont Meta Memorial Park, 2:00 PM, Saturday, December 16, 2006 with the Rev. Chris Hall officiating.
The family would like to thank Dr. Ferris for his care and Retama Manor for their excellent and loving care of our Nanny.
