Ophelia W. Ashworth was born September 17, 1904 and passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2011 at age of 106.
Ophelia grew up in Fentress, TX the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Waller. Always proud of her family history, she had traced her heritage dating back to William in the 1015 Battle of Hastings.
Ophelia graduated from Mary Harden Baylor and was a school teacher. In 1929 she came to the valley and worked for Lon C. Hill, Sr. Later Ophelia worked as a collection agent for the IRS, being the first female agent west of the Mississippi River.
Ophelia married Tom Ashworth in 1947. They were married for 58 years until Tom’s death in 2004. She continued to live in their home until her death. Juanita Limon was her faithful attendant for 18 years.
Ophelia was the bookkeeper for the Rio Grande Valley Shriners, a member to the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. She was an avid hunter and loved music.
Ophelia is survived by nephews, nieces and very loyal loving friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Ashworth.
Visitation hours will be held Wednesday, August 24, 2011 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, August 25, 2011, 10 a.m., at Restlawn Mausoleum Chapel in La Feria with her nephew, Dan P. Junkin officiating.
