Naomi Burke Bryant, 80, long-time resident of Harlingen, went to be with Lord on Saturday, June 2, 2007, after a long illness.  She had been a resident of Victoria Gardens of Frisco, Texas, for the past four years.
Naomi was born the third of four children to Clifton Featherstone and Woodie Vila Parson Burke on September 28, 1926, near Harlingen, Cameron County, Texas.  She graduated from high school at Wilson Tract High School in Primera in 1944, after which she took a clerical position in Washington D.C. joining scores of other young “government girls” who were crucial to the success of America’s war effort.
On June 7, 1945, Naomi became the bride of John Thomas (J.T.) Bryant in a small family wedding at the home of her aunt, Cloyce Holida, in Combes, Texas.  They were married for 56 years; by his side she served as a faithful Pastor’s wife through his 3 pastorates, including 33 years at Grace Baptist Church in Harlingen.  Naomi worked for many years in the bookkeeping department and later as a teller for Harlingen National and First National (later InterFirst) Bank.  She retired in 1986.
Naomi was preceded in death by her parents; by her older sister, Leigha Burke; by two sisters-in-law, Oriole Burke and Jeanne Burke; by her brother-in-law, Blondell Jones; and by her husband, J.T. Bryant.  She is survived by her sister, LaVerne Jones; her brother, Clifton W. Burke; her son, John T. (Naoma) Bryant, Jr.; her daughter, Vila (James) Huggins; 7 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted by her son, John T. Bryant, Jr., Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Portland, Texas, at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home on Friday, June 8, 2007 at 2 p.m.  Interment will follow at Combes Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Thursday, June 7, 2007 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
