Harlingen:
Mildred G. “Butch” Martin, 84, died June 16, 2007 at Golden Palms Nursing home in Harlingen, TX.
Born June 4, 1923 in Quicksands, KY to Anderson Greer and Sarah Jane Combs, she grew up in Knoxville, TN, attended Central High School, and graduated from Fort Sanders Nursing School as a Registered Nurse.
Her first job as a nurse was with the Veterans Administration Hospital in Johnson City, TN. The she married a newly commissioned U.S. Air Force pilot, Leland M. “Pappy” Martin. They moved to Sacramento, CA and she nursed at the Mercy Hospital until her first daughter, Lee Ann came along.
She became a full time mother and about a year and a half later her second daughter, Mitzi Jo, joined the family.
At her urging, they decided on an Air Force career and she moved many times and set up housekeeping in 32 locations in the U.S., Hawaii, Germany, and England before her husband retired and selected Harlingen as their home.
In Harlingen, she continued her lifelong habit of being involved in the community as a volunteer. At her death she had put in nearly 15, 000 hours as the most active volunteer of the Rio Grande Center Volunteers.
A member of the Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church she was also an officer of the Town and Country Garden Club.
Much of her time was spent as an exceptionally active supporter of her husband’s activities in the Confederate Air Force, the Air Force Association, and the Retired Officers Association.
She was enthusiastice participant of Rotary International during the year her husband spent as District Governor. She was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by the North Harlingen Rotary Club and became a Benefactor of the Foundation.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years and two daughters Lee Ann Geneve of Sonoma, CA and Mitzi Jo Martin of Harlingen.
The family request that in Lieu of flowers a contribution to the Rio Grande State Center Volunteers or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home in Harlingen from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 18.
A memorial service will be held at the Treasure Hills Presbyterian Church at 2120 Ed Carey Drive in Harlingen at 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 19.
Funeral services will be held at the Providence Methodist Church in Patrick Springs, VA at 11:00 a.m., Friday June 22.
