Michael Haynes Callaway

Michael Haynes Callaway, 57, died on January 20, 2009 surrounded by the family he loved so much after fighting a courageous battle with bladder cancer.   He was preceded in death by his parents, Nina Oleta and Haynes Thomas Callaway, and family members Jo Ann Linney, Marsha Cheney, and Jerry Linney.
Michael was born on February 7, 1951 in Raymondville, Texas and graduated from Raymondville High School in 1969.  After high school, Michael attended Sam Houston State University graduating with a degree in Business  Administration.
In 1987, he met the love of his life, Alice Sanders.  They married shortly thereafter and shared a wonderful life together filled with laughter and adventure, and blessed with the love of a devoted family and many cherished friends.
Michael and Alice raised their family in Harlingen.  Michael was an independent insurance claims adjuster owning his successful business since 1982.
Michael was a member of the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce, Texas Claims Association, member and past-president of Rio Grande Valley Claims Association, and past chairman of the Harlingen-McAllen Arbitration Committee.   He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Harlingen.
An avid fisherman and golfer, Michael had a wide circle of friends whom he loved dearly.  He enjoyed life to the fullest, and he will be remembered fondly for his great sense of humor, kind and gentle heart, and wonderful generosity.  He was proud of his leadership and involvement in the Southern Hackers Invitational Tournament, a charity golf tournament, for so many years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Alice; his children Todd Callaway (Melanie), Alison Sitzman (Darius), Katy Jefferies (Jeff), Collis Thompson (Amanda); his grandchildren Jaden, Cade, and Chloe Callaway; Abigail, Marina, and Adrian Sitzman; and Alice Jefferies; siblings Billie Davis, Virginia Reynolds (Jesse), Sue Lewis (Jimmy), Dennis Bearden, June Crosby (Scott), John Linney Jr. (Shirley), and James Linney (Teresa); Alice’s sisters  Ann Johnston (Tip) and Kay Newton (Tom); and father-in-law, Joe Sanders.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Harlingen on Friday, January 23 at 10 a.m.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are: John T. Ragsdale, Joe Vallejo, Tip Johnston, James Duddlesten, Tim Elliott, Forrest Jackson, Jim Russell, James Boone, and Tom Newton.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK, 73123.  In addition, the family encourages everyone to make blood donations at their local blood bank.
The family wishes to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, especially Dr. Siefker-Radtke.  They would also like to thank Dr. Shenkenberg of Harlingen. A great debt of gratitude goes to Joe Perez for his spiritual guidance and the many friends and family who held Michael and his family in their prayers.
