Harlingen:
Mary H. White, 92, passed away Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at her residence at the Golden Palms Retirement Center in Harlingen.
Mary was born October 25, 1918 in Albertville, AL to William and Martha Hunt. She lived in Birmingham, AL for several years where she met and married Gary White in 1947. They lived in many places including Chile and Mexico.
After Gary retired in 1976, they “hunted for a place in the sun” and chose McAllen in 1978. While in McAllen, they volunteered at the Museum of South Texas History and at church related activities. They lived in McAllen 6 months a year and spent summers in the Northwoods of Wisconsin where they owned a home.
Although they never had children of their own, they had volunteered with the Salvation Army in Chile and got to know 2 orphaned girls there. They enrolled the girls in a Methodist school for 8 years and both became bilingual secretaries, one in Barcelona, Spain and the other in Paris.
After 26 years in McAllen, the Whites moved to the Golden Palms Retirement and Health Center in Harlingen. Mary was an active bridge player and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
Mary is survived by her husband, Gary White of Harlingen and many friends and extended family.
A Celebration of Mary’s life will be held in the Texas Room at the Golden Palms Retirement Center, 10:00 AM, Monday, September 5, 2011 with the Rev. David Mann officiating.
